Swim Lessons Resume

by Dad - June 12, 2023

Ah, the long-awaited return to the realm of swim lessons. Living through the hot Arizona summers, learning to swim is almost a necessity. My children will eventually all reach an age where their friends will want to go swimming and to water parks and have pool parties.

Due to a combination of circumstances—COVID-related disruptions and our inadvertent procrastination in registering last year when everyone was rushing to get their kids in lessons again—our triumphant return was delayed. Three years have passed since my children last attended lessons – though they love being in pools. The time has finally come to dive back into the world of aquatic education.

As we embark on this aquatic journey once more, we are faced with a trio of unique challenges.

Garett, my brave young soul, takes his first steps into the realm of swimming, carrying with him a deep-seated fear of water touching his delicate eyes. This fear manifests itself in every shower he takes, an aversion that must be conquered to unlock the vast possibilities that lie ahead. We are certain that once he sees other kids his age frolicking in the water, he will eagerly join in the fun.

Frances, my precious bundle of nerves, stands on the precipice of a new chapter in her aquatic voyage. She gets nervous to the point of throwing up before major new experiences, like the first day of school, or starting swimming lessons. Nervous yet determined, she eagerly embraces the opportunity to learn and grow in the watery playground. With each stroke and kick, she’ll discover the power within herself, and gradually overcome her trepidation.

Ruth, my remarkable daughter, embarks on a different path, one tailored to her unique needs and abilities. As she joins a beginner class designed for older children with special needs, she faces the challenge of venturing beyond her comfort zone and embracing the unknown. The water beckons to her, offering a space where she can explore her own capabilities and dispel the notion of drowning that lingers in her mind. With patient guidance and unwavering support, Ruth shall learn to trust in her abilities, discovering the joy and freedom that comes from conquering her fears.
